EMPLOYMENT & LITERACY PROGRAM

Help for English Language Learners

The Employment and Literacy Program (ELP) of Appleton’s Valley Packaging Industries, Inc. is a workplace-based English as a Second Language (ESL) course designed specifically for limited or non-English speaking individuals who want to learn workplace literacy and basic survival English.

This ESL resource offers training onsite for one hour a day during an eight-hour work day. This 21-week course focuses on:

  • Workplace literacy
  • Basic survival English skills, both verbal and written, with emphasis on American work culture
  • Obtaining and retaining permanent community employment in order for English language learners to attain maximum economic and vocational independence
  • Job placement assistance

During ESL class, students learn to:

  • Complete job applications independently
  • Gain the skills needed to pass a basic job interview and answer questions about work history, education and current job duties
  • Knowledge of basic health and safety practices in the workplace
  • One hour per week is dedicated to "computer time," where English language learners in the lower levels study vocabulary and pronunciation; higher-level students learn job search techniques on the Internet, among other sources

More about this ESL Resource

ELP is an ongoing project with open enrollment throughout the year. Some students will require more education beyond the 21 weeks or additional ESL resources to fully understand the necessary skills.
